Red light therapy has gone from clinic-only treatment to something you can do on your sofa in ten minutes. With that shift has come a lot of noise: rainbow-coloured masks, dramatic before-and-afters, and prices that swing from £30 to £400 for what looks like the same thing. This guide cuts through it. We will explain how the light is understood to work, what the published research has and has not shown, what you can realistically expect, and how to actually use a device so it earns its place in your routine.

What red light therapy is

Red light therapy, known in the research literature as photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence how skin cells behave. Unlike a laser or IPL, it does not work by heating or damaging the skin. The light is non-thermal, which is why it can be used at home without downtime.

It is the same fundamental technology used in professional skin clinics and in premium at-home LED masks. The difference between a clinic panel, a £400 designer mask, and a well-made affordable one is largely about build, coverage, and the specific wavelengths used, not about some secret different science.

How it is understood to work

The leading explanation in the research is that red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy-producing part of your cells. As skin ages, cellular activity slows down. The light is understood to give those cells a nudge, supporting the skin's own renewal processes. A useful, if simplified, way to picture it: a little like putting a battery back into tired cells.

This is also why the effect is gradual rather than instant. You are supporting a biological process over weeks, not applying something that changes the surface immediately.

The wavelengths that matter

This is the single most important thing to understand, and it is where most of the marketing falls apart. Light is measured in nanometres (nm), and only certain wavelengths have meaningful research behind them for skin. Two come up again and again:

  • Red light, around 630–660nm. Works nearer the surface. This is the range most studied for the look of fine lines, firmness, and an even, radiant complexion.
  • Near-infrared light, around 830–850nm. Invisible to the eye and reaches deeper into the skin. Studied for supporting deeper skin structure and renewal.

Here is the part the rainbow masks would rather you did not dwell on: a mask that offers seven colours is not seven times better. Most of those colours have little to no robust evidence behind them for anti-ageing, and spreading a device across many colours often means each one is weaker. The wavelengths with the strongest published research are red and near-infrared. A device built around those two, at proper strength, is doing the part that actually matters.

The quick version: if you only remember one thing, it is this. Look for red (around 630–660nm) and near-infrared (around 830–850nm). Those are the wavelengths the research keeps returning to. What the research shows

Red and near-infrared light is one of the more studied areas in non-invasive skincare. We are not going to overstate it, and we will be clear about what the studies measured. Two of the most frequently cited controlled trials are below, summarised honestly.

Lee et al., 2007 — a double-blind, split-face trial

In this prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, split-face study, 76 people with facial wrinkles were treated with LED devices using 830nm, 633nm, a combination of the two, or a sham light, twice a week for four weeks. The combination of red and near-infrared wavelengths produced measurable improvements, and the researchers concluded that 830nm and 633nm LED phototherapy is an effective approach for skin rejuvenation. The split-face, double-blinded design is what makes it well regarded: each person acted as their own control.

Wunsch & Matuschka, 2014 — a controlled trial of 136 volunteers

This prospective, randomised, controlled trial involved 136 volunteers treated with red and near-infrared light over 30 sessions. Using blinded clinical photography, ultrasound measurement of collagen density, and digital profilometry, the treated groups showed significantly improved skin complexion and skin feeling, improved skin roughness, and a measured increase in intradermal collagen density compared with controls.

Other reviews and trials, such as Barolet (2008) and Avci et al. (2013), have explored the same territory and the underlying mechanisms. The overall picture from the literature is genuinely encouraging for the appearance of skin, while still being more modest than a lot of marketing implies. What to realistically expect

An honest word here, because most brands skip it. Red light therapy is not going to iron out deep, established wrinkles, and it is not a substitute for clinical procedures if that is what you are after. Anyone promising it will erase years overnight is overselling.

What it is genuinely associated with is the look of firmer, smoother, more radiant skin over consistent use, that often-described "glass skin" glow. Think of it as one of the most evidence-backed things you can add to a routine for the appearance of healthy skin, used patiently.

Results are gradual. Most studies run over four to twelve weeks of consistent use. If you do it twice and give up, you will not see much. The people who are happiest with red light therapy treat it like brushing their teeth: a short, regular habit rather than a one-off fix.

How to use it at home

  • Use it on clean, dry skin. Most guidance suggests bare skin with no products underneath, so nothing sits between the light and your face.
  • Keep it consistent. Around ten minutes, most evenings, is a common and manageable routine.
  • Apply your serums afterwards. It is often suggested that using the light first, then applying your skincare, helps the rest of your routine do more.
  • Be patient. Give it a proper run of several weeks before you judge it.

Is it safe?

Red and near-infrared light therapy at the levels used in consumer LED devices is non-thermal and is generally considered well tolerated, with studies reporting no significant adverse effects. It does not contain UV and is not the same as a sunbed. That said, a few sensible notes: if you are pregnant, have a photosensitivity condition, take medication that increases light sensitivity, or have a specific eye condition, check with a medical professional first. Always follow the instructions for your specific device, and use any included eye protection if recommended.

How long until I see results?
Most research runs over four to twelve weeks of consistent use. Treat it as a habit, not a one-off, and give it at least a month before judging.
Are the cheap masks a con?
Not always, but many cut corners on the wavelengths that matter or spread themselves thin across colours that do little. The thing to check is whether a device genuinely delivers red and near-infrared light at proper strength, rather than how many colours it lists or how big the brand name is.
Why do prices range from £30 to £400?
Largely build quality, coverage, and brand. The core science of the red and near-infrared wavelengths is the same. A higher price does not automatically mean better light, and a low price does not automatically mean it works.
Can I use it with my normal skincare?
Yes. The common approach is to use the light first on clean skin, then apply your serums and moisturiser afterwards.
Does it help the neck and chest too?
